Depending on geographic location, utility companies have a variety of ways of charging companies for power used.

Power manufactured at the generating station is measured in kVa but it is normally billed out to the customer in kW. Nevertheless utility companies are keenly aware of your facility's total demand in kVa and will frequently penalize you for exceeding certain thresholds. Sometimes these peak demand penalties or 'ratchets' can be extremely high. Powerboss reduces both kVa and kW simultaneously in many applications.

Some facilities can be protected from these penalties by the installation of banks of capacitors to raise the overall power factor, but capacitors are a fixed solution to a fluctuating problem and do not resolve the underlying issues within the plant.
