Which way are Energy Prices Headed?
Energy prices are affected by the following key factors:
  • Supply
  • Demand
  • Major Weather Events
  • Geo-Political Climate
  • The World Economy
  • The US Economy
  • Seasonal Cycles
  • Speculation
We are currently coming off at a 6-year low in energy prices as global energy demand starts to recover.
After the big surge due to the incredible rise in oil prices from $25/bbl to over $125/bbl, the global financial crisis caused demand for energy to weaken substantially.  Now that the world economies have stabilized and are recovering, energy prices have started to rise again.
If you believe the world economies are recovering and that energy demand will rise, now is the time to lock in these historically low rates.

Again using NYMEX 12-month Natural Gas Strip prices as a proxy for electricity, this graph provides an indication of how wholesale electricity supply prices have fluctuated in the last 3 years.

From this graph you can see that energy prices are currently about as low as they can go.  Now is the time to lock in rates before the US and World economies recover and rates rise again.

- This graph is useful for seeing which way the base price of energy supply has moved in the last 12 months.

- Gas prices are a relatively close proxy for current electricity prices.

- Remember this is a relative price for the source energy, and does not include various additional price components ( 'adders'), and local variations.
